The Rise of “Computing Power Commerce” as the Next-Generation Business Model
Dr. Colin Lee, Dean of the Academy of Economics and Digital Assets at 《Wen Wei Po》, believes that e-commerce, as a form of internet entrepreneurship, may have become an outdated model of the previous generation. Instead, the next generation of business models will revolve around “computing power.” With the advancement of technology, particularly in artificial intelligence (AI) and blockchain, “computing power commerce” (算商) will emerge as a new growth driver and innovative direction for future industries.
“Computing power commerce forms a vast business model through chips, new internet infrastructure, and data centers, creating a new paradigm of selling ‘computing power,'” said Dr Colin Lee.
He emphasized that computing power will become the core driving force of future commerce. Through the construction of data centers, a massive new commercial ecosystem will be established. For instance, Hong Kong’s recent push in fintech has greatly benefited from advancements in AI and blockchain technologies, both of which rely heavily on enhanced computing power. Lee believes that Hong Kong, as an emerging data center hub, will play a significant role in this domain. Additionally, China’s domestically developed chip technology will provide a solid foundation for this trend.
Regarding the emerging business model of “computing power commerce,” Dr Colin Lee views this new market as inherently open and free. As an international business and financial hub, Hong Kong should leverage its unique geographical position and open market environment to actively participate in global competition in technology and innovation. Furthermore, Hong Kong must take effective measures to ensure that top-tier talent remains in the region for development. It should also promote the “open-source” approach to technology as much as possible, fostering a new cultural environment that encourages openness and collaboration, thereby creating a more dynamic and cooperative innovation ecosystem.
In conclusion, Dr Colin Lee insights highlight the transformative potential of computing power as the cornerstone of future commerce. Hong Kong, with its strategic advantages and commitment to innovation, is well-positioned to lead this new era of “computing power commerce” and contribute to the global technological landscape.
